Dry Needling
Dry needling is a highly effective treatment technique whereby acupuncture needles are used to provide an analgesic effect by acting on the nerves that supply the muscle and subsequently allowing the tissue to relax.
Dry needling which has also been known as myofascial trigger point dry needling or trigger point dry needling involves the use of small filiform needles in an attempt to reduce pain and tension in tight muscles. The treatment involves a small gauge needle is inserted into myofascial trigger points in a tight muscle to relieve tension and muscle tightness in patients. During treatment, a local twitch response may occur in a taut muscle that causes an analgesic effect and is thought to act on the nerves supplying the muscles to allow it to relax and reduce overall pain.
Why does it work?
Emerging evidence suggests that Dry Needling may work by the principles of the gate control theory of pain and help stimulate the production of endorphins, serotonin and acetylcholine which help reduce tension and pain (Furlan et al., 2005).
